Artists called to be Village heroes

More Information

$3000 is up for grabs in the City of Sydney's 3rd annual Sydney, City of Villages Art Exhibition and Prize which is now open for entries.

Ten of the competition finalists will be displayed throughout the City of Sydney on 30 JCDecaux street furniture sites for three weeks from 15 July - 4 August.

"Vibrant, artistic and innovative villages are important to the City of Sydney and its residents, and competitions such as Sydney, City of Villages Art Exhibition and Prize help us create just that," said Cultural and Community Services Deputy Chair Councillor Marcelle Hoff.

"City of Sydney wants to bring art into the streets of the City and we are proud to support local artists. I encourage artists to get involved and submit their works".

The finalists' artworks will also be exhibited at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, a unique inner-city arts centre in the heart of Sydney, from 15 - 26 July.

Sydney, City of Villages began in 2006 and this year organisers are hoping to attract hundreds ofentries in a range of styles. The competition is open to all Australian artists in paint, printing or drawing. Artists may portray any aspect of "village" life in the City of Sydney.

In previous years artists have drawn inspiration from their own neighbourhoods, local identities, iconic buildings or local landmarks.

Commenting on last years finalists, Ms Hoff said "the images encapsulate the Sydney's Villages beautifully. We see the City skyline over a clothesline in Redfern, the iconic Badde Manors café in Glebe, a verdant Sydney park, a bicycle on King Street in Newtown, the bow of a ferry in Sydney Harbour, and walkers across the Bridge and Five Ways in Paddington."

Selecting a winner may not be easy, however this year's distinguished judging panel includes S.H Ervin Gallery Director Jane Watters, Deborah Edwards, Senior Curator Australian Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and Lindy Lee, renowned Sydney artist.

Entries for the competition close at 5pm on Wednesday 4 June 2006. All details for the competition, including the curatorial brief and submission form, can be found at www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/grants or telephone 02 9265 9296.
