In the cinema of Yasujiro Ozu, the onset of modernisation and westernisation shape everything, from family ethics to fashions in food, drink, work, dance and clothes.
Directing movies for much of the 20th century, Ozu was a master of lyric melodrama and low-key comedy. Like the works in Taisho Chic, this series of films explores the impact of the clash and embrace of modernity and tradition in Japan.
Films include Early spring (Soshun)1956, Late Spring (Banshun) 1949, Equinox Flower (Higanbana)1958 and An Autumn afternoon (Sanma no aji) 1962.
