2010 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Rainbow Flag Raising

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP will raise a rainbow flag over Sydney Town Hall today celebrating the 2010 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival.

The origins of the rainbow flag date back more than 30 years when an artist called Gilbert Baker designed it for the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. Since then it's become an iconic symbol of areas that are gay-friendly or gay-safe.

"As Sydney is home to Australia's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and we host the internationally recognised Mardi Gras, we are proud to fly this rainbow flag on our most important building - Sydney Town Hall," said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

"It sends a strong message to our residents, workers and visitors of our unwavering support for the GLBT communities, and of our recognition of their important contribution to this City."

The City of Sydney regularly displays rainbow banners along Oxford Street in Darlinghurst for Mardi Gras and Pride Week. Last year, 630 of them were flown for 16 weeks throughout the year in Oxford Street, Taylor Square and surrounding streets.

The rainbow flag colours symbolise life (red), healing (orange), sunlight (yellow), nature (green), harmony (blue) and spirit (violet or purple).

"The raising of the rainbow flag today celebrates the start of this year's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival, which plays a valuable role in breaking down barriers and promoting equality and respect in our community," said Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Phillip Black.

"Now in its 33rd year, Mardi Gras has helped create a more open and tolerant environment for lesbians and gay men," Ms Moore said.

The City is a major sponsor of the 2010 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade and has entered a City of Sydney float since 2005 celebrating and supporting the GLBT community and recognises its contribution to the wider Sydney community.

The 2010 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade will commence along Oxford Street at approximately 8pm on Saturday 28 February 2010.
