New Dimension to Laneway Art Program

City of Sydney Media Release - 22 March 2010

The City of Sydney's innovative scheme for adding vibrancy to laneways and forgotten spaces is set to take-on a new dimension.

As part of the preparation for the next round of the Laneway Art Program in October, a search is on for additional "creative juices" to help take the scheme to another level of excitement and panache.

The City is hoping to attract a new Curator or Curatorial team to help with the ongoing challenge of reinventing, rediscovering and enlivening its trove of special niches.

"This next chapter in our quest will further empower the look, feel and atmosphere of the Laneway Art Program in time for Sydney's biggest outdoor arts festival Art & About," said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

"What we are seeking are new creative voices to help source innovative and exciting ideas to temporarily transform our City laneways with engaging artworks and inspiring ideas - covering the period from September until the end of the Sydney Festival in January 2011."

This will build on the hugely successful By George! Hidden Networks art installations which were so popular. Indeed, Council is now considering making one of them - Forgotten Songs in Angel Place - permanent.

"It's about creating interesting new spaces for people to explore and reactivating public laneways with the unexpected, which is a key part of our Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision to create a lively and engaging City," Ms Moore said.

The Laneway Art Program Curator, or Curatorial team, will help develop a curatorial theme and select up to eight artists or collaborative teams to develop high quality temporary laneway art projects in response to that theme.

Further application details can be found online at: www.lanewaysbygeorge.com.au

Stage 1 Curatorial proposals close 20th April 2010.
