Cadman's Cottage

Built in 1816, Cadman's Cottage is one of only a handful of Sydney buildings that remain from the first 30 years of the colony.

Originally built as the 'Coxswain's Barracks', it was attached to Governor Macquarie's dockyard and stores on the shores of Sydney Cove. The cottage's survival can since be attributed to constant Government and institutional ownership, first as the barracks, then as the residence of John Cadman, superintendent of Government Craft (1826-45).

From 1845-64, it was headquarters to the Water Police, and then, from 1865-1970, the Sydney Sailors' Home Trust.

Restoration of the cottage began in 1972, and is now home to a museum and the Sydney Harbour National Park Information Centre.

Cadman's Cottage is open every day (except Good Friday and Christmas Day). Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4.30 pm.
