Marthaville was built by George Brown. The twin-gabled homestead is the first sawn timber dwelling of the area, completed 1886 and named 'Marthaville' after his wife Martha.

Besides being a builder, saw miller, cilvil magistrate, district coroner and shire councillor, George Brown became a successful coal prospector.

In 1970 the homestead was occupied by his grand daughters. The purchase and renovation started as part of the bicentenary project and was handed over to the people of Cessnock. Sufficient funds were raised to turn it into a unique arts and craft centre.

Marthaville Guildry Craft and Gift Centre was established in Novemeber 1995.
