Surviving Australia

The Surviving Australia exhibition at the Australian Museum reveals stories of Australia's animal inhabitants and tales of their adaptation and survival over millions of years of changing climate and landscape.

Divided into six thematic areas - Blue Edge, Island Homes, Our Backyard, Dangerous Australians, Adapt or Die and Where Are They Now - the permanent new 925 square metre exhibition will unlock all the secrets and surprises of animal life in Australia.

Australia has it all - deserts and snow-capped mountains, rainforest and grassland, beaches and reefs, city and bush. Living in every one of these habitats are species which are equally varied.

Surviving Australia will take you on an immersive journey though these unique environments to discover the challenges and opportunities they present for the diverse fauna and flora that must evolve to survive in an ever-changing landscape.

Discover which animals thrive in our urban sprawl as you compare our mini-backyards with yours. Come face to face with a live Diamond Python, an Eastern Blue-tongue Lizard and Green Tree Frog and see a slice of pond life under the microscope.

Watch live cuttlefish swim, change colours and feed in a three metre tank with other marine dwellers such as sea stars and sea anemones. Enjoy beautiful underwater projections of rarely-seen sponge gardens; join staff for spot talks; and use a touch-screen interactive to discover the weird and wonderful sea creatures that adapt and survive at great depths.

Australia is known world-wide for its dangerous animals but is this reputation really deserved?

Investigate the strategies used by Australia's most dangerous creatures to hunt, catch and kill their prey. Learn to recognise a Blue-ringed Octopus; see an Irukandji Jellyfish; name the ten most venomous snakes in the world; and, discover which sharks to avoid!

Meet our giants from the past as you come face to face with unique Australian megafauna including killer marsupial 'lions'; giant wombats and echidnas; fanged kangaroos and the largest marsupial that ever lived - the Diprotodon.

In the last 200 years over 50 species of animals and plants have disappeared from Australia - presumed extinct. Is this a wake-up call? Rediscover extinct species such as the Tasmanian Tiger and explore the habitats in which threatened and vulnerable species live.

And from the past to the present, and onwards to the future as global warming and sea level rise are changing habitats - even our own. Don't miss the chance to find out how this will impact on your suburb - will your house be underwater with a 10 or even a 5 metre sea level rise?

As we come face to face with a rapidly changing planet, never has it been more crucial for us to understand the Australian environment - to comprehend the impact of past and present changes and to appreciate our role in 'Surviving Australia.'
