Emerging Artist Exhibition at The Galeries
|Sydney's cultural and lifestyle retail destination, The Galeries, will showcase the very best of contemporary art with its annual Emerging Artist Exhibition in partnership with Art Month, Sydney from the 1st -30th June 2017. |
The one-of-a-kind exhibition showcases and supports Australia's next generation of art talent. After initiating a public call out to the emerging artist community during Art Month Sydney in March, five finalists have been hand-selected for the showcase by Art Month's Artistic Director Barry Keldoulis. The group encapsulates developing talent across a multitude of mediums featuring Robin Hearfield, Joanne Makas, Zac Harold, Hana Hoogedeure and Zoe Wong.
The Galeries will display each of the artists in one of its five designated public art spaces, the four laneways and the central atrium. The up-coming talent, whose works range from sculpture, photography and installation will be exposed to the centre's 1.8 million monthly visitors as they compete for the major prize, a $4,000 cash prize and a year-long mentorship with Barry Keldoulis.
Each artist has been inspired by far-ranging motivations from Hana Hoogedeure's 'Goodbye Yellow Brick' to Zoe Wong's' inspiration -Disney's Mulan. The beauty of fold manipulation and chance has instigated the works from Joanne Makas whilst the pieces from Robin McIntyre Hearfield showcase Greek fable through the medium of virtual space. Zac Harold, the director at Stacks Project, works with the interpretations and recreation of space and the dynamic of mundane objects. The diversity in inspiration and backgrounds will undoubtedly create a feeling of unique artistic appreciation for each visitor.
Customers will also be able to take part in the process by voting in the People's Choice award. A $1,000 cash prize will be given to the people's favourite. Each vote entry by shoppers will receive a complimentary SoL Cup, a hand blown reusable coffee cup designed exclusively by Sydney illustrator Furry Little Peach, which will then be filled with a free, delicious coffee from two cafe favourites, Sumo Salad (Mon-Fri) and The Daily Eatery (Sat-Sun).
The Galeries continues to be benefactor and champion for Australian artistic talent. Its commitment to melding art, fashion and food into the retail space continues to create a shopping experience like no other.
