McCafe - Australia

When Starbucks arrived down under during the Sydney Olympics trying to push the same sweetened drinks that had won them the American market the locals rejected the brand. Within a decade the worldwide leader in coffee had racked up over $100 million in losses and closed 70% of their stores in Australia.

Melbourne

Though McDonald's is also an American chain its coffee subsidiary is not - McCafe was born in Melbourne doling out the Flat Whites and Long Blacks that locals preferred to drink. Australian coffee culture has since been exported around the world with over 4000 McCafe locations in 60 countries.

Taupo New Zealand

Commentators have called this the "World's Coolest McDonald's" and they wouldn't be wrong for saying so: a DC-3 airplane inherited from a car dealership that used to occupy this plot of land was turned into a seating area for customers.

Gary He

Gary He is a James Beard Award-winning photographer and writer based in Brooklyn NY. His style of on-the-ground visual storytelling has been published in The New York Times Eater Bloomberg Bon Appétit and Saveur.

Having taken readers behind the scenes of New York City's most famous restaurants dining with presidential candidates on the campaign trail and in the trenches alongside the hospitality industry's essential workers during the pandemic Gary now turns his attention to the world's most important restaurant: McDonald's.
